Leicestershire Surgery Unit Plans Halted Over Costs
13 Feb
Summary
- £10m same-day surgery unit in Leicestershire may be scrapped.
- Rising costs and insufficient demand are cited reasons for cancellation.
- Local MP blames council and NHS leaders for project delays.

Plans for a £10 million same-day surgery unit in Leicestershire are facing cancellation by NHS bosses due to significant cost increases and insufficient demand. The proposed facility in Hinckley, intended to replace the historic 125-year-old Hinckley and District Hospital, received planning permission last year but now appears unviable.
Projected costs have reportedly risen by £2 million, with current and future demand deemed insufficient for efficient resource use. NHS chiefs also cited issues with demolishing the old hospital, planning application delays, and expiring funding set for March.
Dr. Luke Evans, the local MP, has voiced strong concerns, attributing project delays to leaders at Hinckley and Bosworth Borough Council and the NHS. He pledged to hold them accountable and seek alternative solutions. Council leader Stuart Bray criticized the national government and Dr. Evans, accusing him of misleading constituents. A spokesperson for the local ICB confirmed the board would discuss the report next week, noting changed circumstances since the original approval eight years prior.
