A significant £32m investment has been approved by NHS England for a new elective care hub in Leeds, focusing on spinal and orthopaedic operations. This state-of-the-art facility will be situated at Chapel Allerton Hospital and is designed to enhance patient care and reduce waiting times.
The hub will feature a 23-bed ward and two dedicated operating theatres, offering protected space for planned surgical procedures. This expansion is anticipated to enable approximately 1,600 extra operations annually, directly addressing current waiting list pressures and improving patient access to treatment.
Funding for this initiative will be provided by NHS England and the West Yorkshire Integrated Care System. In addition to the facility, the investment will support the recruitment of 142 new staff members required to operate the hub efficiently. Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust aims to open the new facility by November 2027.
Health minister Karin Smyth highlighted the importance of such dedicated hubs in ensuring surgeries can proceed year-round without disruption from emergency cases. This investment is expected to help thousands of individuals receive necessary treatments sooner, underscoring the commitment to improving healthcare delivery in the region.
