Leeds Maternity Crisis: Families Meet Health Secretary
7 Oct
Summary
- Families to meet health secretary over Leeds maternity failings.
- Review covers deaths and severe harm from 2011 to March 2028.
- Inquiry investigates at least 56 baby and two mother deaths.
Families affected by serious issues in Leeds' maternity and neonatal care will meet with the health secretary to voice their concerns. Representatives from the Leeds Maternity Families Group are scheduled to discuss their experiences with government officials and Michelle Welsh, the government's maternity adviser.
Donna Ockenden is leading a comprehensive review into the maternity and neonatal services provided by Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust (LTHT). This inquiry, focusing on events from January 1, 2011, to March 31, 2028, was established following reports of repeated failures.
The review was prompted by findings indicating that the deaths of at least 56 babies and two mothers at LTHT over the past five years may have been preventable. Clinical case reviews are slated to commence in November, examining eight categories of harm or death, including stillbirths and maternal deaths.
