Cheap Kids' Clothes Hide Lead Danger

Summary
- Some fast-fashion shirts contain high levels of lead.
- Children chewing fabric can ingest dangerous lead amounts.
- Brightly colored textiles showed higher lead concentrations.
New research indicates that "fast fashion" children's clothing may contain dangerous levels of lead. A study presented at the American Chemical Society meeting revealed that several fast-fashion shirts exceeded the allowed 100 parts per million limit for lead.
Researchers highlighted that children are particularly at risk because they tend to put clothing in their mouths. The simulated stomach digestion tests suggest that lead exposure from mouthing behavior could surpass the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's daily limit for children.
Brightly colored textiles, such as red and yellow, were found to have higher lead concentrations than less vibrant options. The study's findings suggest that prolonged chewing on contaminated fabric could elevate a child's blood lead levels.
The research team plans further studies on laundering effects and potential spread of lead contamination. They noted that while natural alternatives exist, changing industry technology would involve significant costs.
