Summary
- A man's denture was removed from his esophagus using a laser.
- The denture was lodged near the windpipe, posing removal risks.
- An advanced endoscopic procedure avoided the need for major surgery.

Doctors at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital have successfully removed a denture lodged in a man's food pipe with a laser-assisted endoscopic procedure. The patient presented with severe respiratory distress and difficulty swallowing after accidentally swallowing the denture, which became lodged in his upper esophagus, close to the windpipe.
Imaging confirmed the denture's precarious position, with its clasps posing a high risk of esophageal injury. Traditional foreign body removal techniques were deemed too dangerous. The medical team opted for an advanced endoscopic approach, using a laser to carefully fragment the denture into smaller pieces within the esophagus.
A protective overtube was then employed to shield the esophageal tissues from the sharp fragments as they were extracted. This laser-assisted technique enabled the complete removal of the foreign body without the need for invasive open surgery, significantly reducing patient morbidity. The patient has since recovered well following the procedure.
