On July 15, 2025, surgeons at Jeevan Jyoti Hospital in Prayagraj, India, performed a groundbreaking laparoscopic procedure to remove a massive 15 cm ovarian endometrioma, or "chocolate cyst," from a 38-year-old patient. The woman had endured debilitating pelvic pain, painful intercourse, and infertility for years due to the rare and unusually large cyst, which had filled her entire pelvic cavity and exerted extreme pressure on surrounding organs.
The team of surgeons carefully planned and executed the complex laparoscopic cystectomy, first aspirating the thick liquid contents of the cyst to reduce its size and then meticulously removing the entire cyst capsule without damaging nearby tissues or causing spillage. This innovative approach allowed them to treat the condition through minimally invasive means, rather than resorting to open surgery.
Following the successful procedure, the patient recovered quickly, with her painful symptoms and bowel function improving significantly. Pathology revealed the cyst to be a benign endometriotic growth, and the patient was started on postoperative hormonal therapy to prevent recurrence. This case highlights how advanced laparoscopic techniques can effectively treat even the most challenging cases of endometriosis, offering patients relief from a debilitating condition and improving their overall quality of life.
