Doctors at Kalyan Singh Super Speciality Cancer Institute (KSSSCI) have successfully performed a complex limb salvage surgery on a young woman, preserving her leg after a diagnosis of aggressive bone cancer. The 22-year-old patient, originally from Rae Bareli, underwent the life-changing procedure, enabling her to walk just five days post-operation.
The surgical team, led by Dr. Ankur Verma, removed the cancerous tibia bone and reconstructed it using a cost-effective prosthesis. This challenging approach aimed not only to save the patient's life but also to maintain the limb's function and improve her overall quality of life, offering an alternative to amputation.
This specialized surgery cost approximately Rs 1.75 lakh. This is substantially less than the Rs 4.5-5 lakh typically charged in private hospitals for similar procedures. KSSSCI has stated that with its current expertise and facilities, such complex limb-preserving surgeries will become a regular offering.
