KP Hospitals Get Mental Health Boost

In a landmark initiative, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has appointed 32 psychologists to district headquarters hospitals across the province. This move by the health department directly addresses the disproportionate burden of mental health conditions, including depression, PTSD, and anxiety, which are prevalent in the region due to decades of conflict and natural disasters.

The newly established mental health desks will serve as crucial entry points for routine patient screening and offer a safe, confidential space for individuals seeking help, thereby combating stigma. These desks will also function as referral hubs, connecting community health workers, basic health units, and tertiary facilities, while generating vital data for future policy decisions.

This effort is part of a larger Rs32 billion project launched in December 2020. The project focuses on revamping infrastructure and equipping 32 district headquarters hospitals with advanced medical equipment, including anesthesia machines, ventilators, and digital X-ray systems. The goal is to enhance both elective and emergency services at the local level, reducing the strain on tertiary care hospitals.

Human resources are also being bolstered through the recruitment and training of emergency technicians and specialists. Over 150 medical professionals have already undergone training. The project, scheduled to conclude in 2028, aims to strengthen healthcare services significantly at the district level, ensuring that people can access better care closer to home.
