Kozhikode Lab Boosts Rare Amoeba Detection
13 Apr
Summary
- New PCR tests can now identify deadly amoeba species on-site.
- Previously, samples were sent to distant labs for confirmation.
- This upgrade speeds up diagnosis for amoebic meningoencephalitis.

The microbiology laboratory at the Government Medical College Hospital, Kozhikode, has significantly enhanced its diagnostic capabilities. It is now equipped with facilities to conduct Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) tests, enabling the direct detection of specific free-living amoebae. These include Naegleria fowleri, Acanthamoeba spp., and Balamuthia mandrillaris, all of which can cause the deadly amoebic meningoencephalitis.
Previously, the lab could only perform microscopic tests on cerebrospinal fluid samples. Confirmation and species identification required sending samples to the State Public Health Laboratory in Thiruvananthapuram or the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research in Chandigarh. This process was lengthy and delayed the start of targeted treatment.
With the new PCR facilities, these crucial tests can now be performed at the Kozhikode hospital itself. This advancement means faster identification of the amoebic species, leading to quicker and potentially more effective treatment for patients suffering from this severe neurological infection.
