Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan recently inaugurated 15 significant development projects at the Government Medical College in Kottayam. The event highlighted the inauguration of a new surgical block and other vital facilities, including a pathology lab and a Maternal and Neonatal Care Unit. These advancements represent a substantial investment of ₹283.60 crore aimed at bolstering public healthcare infrastructure across the state.
Speaking at the ceremony, Mr. Vijayan emphasized the Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board's (KIIFB) role in funding development, with over ₹1,00,000 crore invested in the past decade. He noted the remarkable transformation in Kerala's health sector, leading to improved neonatal and maternal mortality rates, positioning the state favorably even against highly developed nations. The government is committed to elevating public hospitals to compete with private institutions.
Health Minister Veena George also highlighted the widespread infrastructural development in all state medical colleges. Cooperation Minister V.N. Vasavan mentioned that Kottayam Medical College alone has seen ₹1,150 crore in development projects over the last decade. The newly inaugurated facilities include a 32-slice CT scanner and a skin bank, with a new toilet block also under construction.
