Doctors Cleared in Kota Hospital Deaths
4 Oct
Summary
- Four committees found no medical negligence by doctors.
- Three senior faculty members were reinstated Friday.
- Five women died from kidney failure after childbirth.
Following widespread public outrage over postpartum deaths and kidney failures at hospitals attached to Kota Medical College, four separate inquiry committees have concluded their investigations. These committees, including panels from AIIMS Delhi and SMS Medical College Jaipur, found no evidence of medical negligence by the involved doctors.
As a result of the exoneration, the Medical Education Department officially cancelled the suspensions and reinstated three senior faculty members on Friday, October 4, 2026. The reinstated doctors include a professor from gynaecology and two associate professors from surgery, who had been suspended on May 9.
The investigations meticulously reviewed medicines, treatment protocols, potential infection sources, and patient histories. No common cause was identified for the maternal deaths, and importantly, no personal fault or negligence was attributed to the three doctors. The committees affirmed that the doctors had adhered to all applicable treatment protocols.
The incidents first came to light on May 5, 2026, when several women admitted for childbirth at New Medical College, Kota, began experiencing kidney failure. Initially affecting five women, the number of suspected cases rose to twelve, including one pregnant woman. Tragically, five of these women died, while seven others recovered and were discharged.
