Kolkata's Mystery Cold: No Cough, Just Congestion!

Hundreds of Kolkatans are currently experiencing an unusual 'coughless cold,' characterized by a runny or blocked nose and watery eyes, but without the common accompanying chest congestion or cough. This peculiar illness emerges after an extended period of influenza, which previously caused prolonged cough and cold symptoms for thousands over the last three months.

Medical experts suggest that this 'coughless cold' might stem from localized infections or irritations confined to the nasal passages, preventing the infection from reaching the lower respiratory tract. Physicians point to influenza viruses as a primary culprit, noting that while they can cause nasal blockage and mild coughs, the absence of lower airway inflammation means no sputum is produced, thus restricting a cough. Other viruses like rhinoviruses and adenoviruses are also considered possible causes, with erratic weather patterns potentially exacerbating symptoms.

Infectious disease specialists explain that if the irritation remains solely within the upper nasal passages and sinuses, a cough may not develop. Mild sinusitis could also present with similar symptoms, usually accompanied by a headache. Respiratory infections do not always produce phlegm or coughing, especially when they affect only the upper airway. However, persistent symptoms may warrant further assessment for secondary bacterial infections. Most cases are expected to improve with symptomatic care, hydration, and rest.
