In Kolkata, a remarkable six-hour surgery concluded with doctors at NRS Medical College successfully removing a tumor the size of a beachball from a 40-year-old woman. The mass, measuring an astounding 36.5 × 30.7 × 16.3 cm, was later identified through biopsy as Myxoid Liposarcoma, a rare malignant cancer.
Over 18 months, the tumor caused progressive abdominal swelling, escalating to a critical condition with severe respiratory distress and a rigid abdomen by early 2026. Previous diagnostic efforts in July 2025 suggested a benign growth, but its aggressive enlargement necessitated further intervention. An MRI on February 27, 2026, revealed the tumor displacing vital organs and exerting pressure on major blood vessels.
The complex surgery on April 20 was skillfully performed by a dedicated surgical and anesthesia team. Post-operative challenges included a 'burst abdomen' on May 4, requiring a return to the operating room. The patient's recovery involved intensive supportive care, including multiple blood and albumin transfusions.
