Kolkata Heats Up: Viral Fever Outbreak Sweeps City

Kolkata is grappling with a widespread viral fever outbreak that has affected hundreds in the past week. The city's high humidity and heat are considered contributing factors, making residents more susceptible to infections. Common symptoms reported include high fever, chest congestion, cough, muscle pain, and significant weakness that prolongs recovery.

Medical professionals have identified Influenza A (H1N1) as a dominant strain, with Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) also detected. Doctors explain that the extreme heat, coupled with frequent transitions between hot outdoor temperatures and air-conditioned indoor environments, weakens the body's natural defenses. This vulnerability facilitates the rapid spread of airborne viruses.

Numerous hospitals have seen a surge in patients presenting with these viral symptoms. For instance, Peerless Hospital admitted at least 10 patients with viral infections, while RN Tagore Hospital and Charnock Hospital reported scores and over 50 patients respectively being treated at their outpatient departments within recent days. Charnock Hospital alone has been treating approximately 10 viral patients daily.

The outbreak is particularly concerning for children, with Neotia Bhagirathi Woman and Child Care Centre observing a rise in Influenza A and seasonal flu cases. Pediatric intensive care units are seeing 8-10 cases daily, many with high-grade fevers reaching 103-104°F, dehydration, and poor oral intake, sometimes necessitating hospitalization for intravenous fluid support.
