A Kolkata resident named Manish Mehta marked his birthday with an extraordinary achievement, completing his 100th Single Donor Platelet (SDP) donation. This selfless act provided a vital transfusion to a patient at Tata Medical Centre who had undergone a stem cell transplant.
Mehta, a trustee of Project Life Force, began his blood donation journey in 2013. His commitment to SDP donations intensified following the tragic loss of a close family member to cancer in 2015. Driven by this personal experience and the profound empathy for families battling the disease, he has been a consistent donor.
Recognizing the stringent criteria for SDP donors and the limited pool, Mehta specifically reserves his eligibility for this type of donation. He frequently receives calls for assistance, particularly from outstation cancer patients lacking local contacts in the city.
Specialists note that SDP is crucial for patients with hematological disorders, blood cancers, and those undergoing transplants. Mehta is among a dedicated group of about 70 to 80 regular SDP donors, contributing at least once a month. His friends joined him at the hospital on his birthday, with some making blood donations while Mehta's procedure was in progress, inspired by his commitment.
