5 Mar
Summary
- Hospitals treated numerous patients for gastrointestinal issues after Holi.
- Eye injuries and skin rashes saw a significant increase this year.
- Dehydration and alcohol-related illnesses were common post-celebration.

Following the recent Holi celebrations, Kolkata's hospitals have seen a sharp increase in patients presenting with a range of post-festival ailments. A significant number of individuals sought medical attention for severe vomiting and diarrhoea, often linked to overindulgence in food and beverages during the two-day festivities. Beyond gastrointestinal issues, emergency departments reported a rise in eye injuries and skin irritations, common during Holi but more prevalent this year.
Medical professionals also noted an uptick in limb injuries from slips and falls during celebrations. Heat exposure, combined with binge drinking, led to instances of dizziness and nausea. Hospitals treated patients for cuts, fractures, and even corneal abrasions from chemical-laden colours and water. Sensitive skin sufferers reported dermatitis and chemical burns, while asthma patients experienced flare-ups, and diabetics saw elevated blood sugar levels from festive sweets and drinks.
