12 Sep
Summary
- Kolkata hospitals see surge in viral diarrhea and dehydration cases.
- Sudden heat and humidity increase are causing widespread fatigue.
- Children and elderly patients are particularly affected by heat illnesses.
Several hospitals in Kolkata have reported a notable increase in patients suffering from viral diarrhea and dehydration-induced fatigue. This surge is attributed to a recent sharp rise in ambient heat and humidity. The prevailing weather conditions have led to widespread exhaustion and illness across the city.
At Peerless Hospital, a rise in viral diarrhea cases and influenza A, Para-influenza, RSV, and adenovirus infections was observed. Similarly, Charnock Hospital has seen a rise in viral diarrhea and dehydration cases, linking them to temperature fluctuations. BP Poddar Hospital noted patients experiencing weakness, dizziness, and nausea after heat exposure, with some requiring admission.
Experts from ILS Hospital Howrah cautioned that rapid temperature increases are more hazardous than gradual ones. Techno India DAMA Hospital treated patients with fever, exhaustion, and sweating, unusual for early September, with some experiencing abdominal cramps and vomiting. These symptoms are linked to seasonal viral infections rather than malaria or dengue.
While most cases are managed with rest, hydration, and symptomatic treatment, elderly patients and those with comorbidities require closer monitoring. Pediatricians have noted a significant number of children suffering from viral diarrhea and dehydration due to heat exposure, impacting their participation in ongoing school examinations.
