Summary
- Genicular artery embolization reduces knee pain and improves function.
- Minimally invasive procedure targets abnormal blood vessels in the knee.
- Eighty percent of patients saw significant improvement after one year.
A groundbreaking procedure known as genicular artery embolization (GAE) is offering significant relief to individuals suffering from chronic knee pain. This minimally invasive technique targets and embolizes abnormal blood vessels around the arthritic knee, which are responsible for inflammation and pain signals.
Researchers reported in the journal Radiology on June 16, 2026, that the procedure was highly effective in a study involving nearly 200 participants. These individuals had not found relief through conventional treatments like physical therapy or medication.
The study followed 114 women and 80 men, with a median age of 69, for one year. Results indicated a substantial decrease in pain scores and a marked improvement in physical function, including daily activities and sports.
Importantly, 80% of patients achieved medically significant improvements, leading researchers to believe GAE could potentially slow the progression of knee arthritis. This offers a promising alternative between injections and joint replacement surgery.
