Kids' Screen Time Skyrockets: A Growing Crisis
11 Aug
Summary
- Junior high students average over five hours online daily.
- Problematic internet use linked to neurodevelopmental traits.
- Excessive screen time may harm children's verbal intelligence.

The increasing amount of time children spend online is emerging as a critical social problem. One 14-year-old junior high student was documented spending over 11 hours daily on her smartphone, more than double the average of five hours and 24 minutes reported for her age group. This excessive usage often occurs when children experience distress or boredom, leading to difficulties in maintaining routines and engaging in offline activities.
Experts note that children's developing frontal lobes, responsible for inhibitory control, struggle to resist addictive online stimuli. This can lead to addiction-like behaviors, where individuals find it difficult to stop using digital media. Such immersion is not merely a sign of weak will but can be a signal of the challenges children face socially or due to neurodevelopmental traits like ADHD or ASD.
Research indicates a correlation between extended daily internet use in children and a subsequent decline in verbal intelligence. Furthermore, adverse effects have been observed on the development of gray matter in the brain and nerve fibers in the cerebellum. Experts emphasize that social media can consume significant amounts of time, requiring careful usage, especially for developing minds.
