Kidney Vouchers: Hope for Transplant Families
16 Feb
Summary
- A national voucher system offers new hope for kidney donation.
- Donors can give a kidney now and help a loved one receive one later.
- This program ensures priority access to a compatible kidney.

A pioneering kidney transplant initiative in Denver is reshaping the donation process, offering families greater flexibility and hope. The AdventHealth Transplant Institute at Porter is participating in a national voucher program, allowing individuals to donate a kidney now while ensuring a future transplant for a designated loved one.
This system, managed by the National Kidney Registry, eliminates the need for direct compatibility between donor and recipient. Instead, a living donor contributes a kidney to the registry's pool, and in return, their chosen recipient receives a voucher. This voucher acts as a priority pass, guaranteeing access to a suitable kidney when it is needed.
The program provides two types of vouchers: a standard voucher for recipients expected to need a transplant within a year, and a family voucher that can protect up to five family members. The first eligible family member can then activate this benefit. This advancement provides significant relief and a clear path forward for individuals awaiting life-saving transplants.
