Kidney Transplant Patient Fights Rejection Amidst Financial Woes

Leila Mirhaydari received a kidney transplant in 2014, a gift she cherished for eight years before her body began rejecting the donated organ. Her journey to re-access consistent healthcare was delayed by pandemic restrictions in Hawaii. Upon finally seeing her doctor in February 2021, lab results confirmed her fears of rejection.

Mirhaydari's own kidneys failed at age 27, leading to years of dialysis and a lengthy wait for a transplant. A living donor, her step-cousin Miles Landis, provided a kidney in September 2014, which she affectionately named 'The Hulk.' This organ freed her from dialysis and allowed her to live life fully for eight years.

The immune system's response to transplanted organs is a constant challenge, managed by immunosuppressant medications. If these medications are insufficient or stopped, the immune system can attack the organ, a process likened to a 'snowball effect.' While living donor kidneys can last 15-20 years, rejection can occur sooner.

In March 2020, Leila lost her restaurant job, jeopardizing her employer-tied health insurance. Facing high medication costs, she made the difficult decision to ration her immunosuppressants, a choice she now views as a critical mistake. She suspects reducing her tacrolimus dosage contributed to her body attacking the kidney.

Now back on the UNOS waiting list, Mirhaydari is preparing for dialysis again and seeking another living donor. A December 2020 law directing Medicare to cover immunosuppressants for life offers future hope, but unfortunately arrived too late for her immediate crisis. She finds comfort in knowing this law may prevent others from enduring similar hardships.
