Smart Bottles Fail Kidney Stone Patients
26 Mar
Summary
- Smart bottles improved fluid intake but not kidney stone rates.
- A hydration program showed limited success in preventing recurrence.
- Individualized hydration targets may be needed for stone prevention.
A recent study indicates that it may be exceedingly difficult for individuals to consume sufficient fluids to prevent kidney stones, a condition known for causing intense pain. Researchers developed a hydration program that included Bluetooth-enabled smart bottles to measure intake, financial incentives, and health coaching.
Participants in the program increased their fluid consumption and urine output over a two-year period. However, this enhanced hydration did not lead to a significant reduction in kidney stone growth or the development of new stones compared to a control group.
Experts now propose that hydration goals should be tailored to individual factors like age, size, and lifestyle. This approach could potentially lead to more effective interventions for managing and preventing kidney stone disease, a chronic condition with debilitating episodes.
