Woman Loses Fingers and Toes to Kidney Stone
10 Jan
Summary
- Kidney stone led to septic shock and amputation of all fingers and toes.
- Patient woke up to find her hands and feet had turned black and purple.
- A 'hand twin' helped doctors create her prosthetic limbs.

Louise Marshallsay experienced a familiar stabbing sensation, which she initially believed to be a kidney stone. Upon visiting the hospital, her suspicions were confirmed, and she was advised to go home. However, her condition rapidly worsened that evening, leading to unconsciousness and her hands and feet turning black and purple within hours.
She was diagnosed with septic shock after four days had passed. To save her major organs, doctors had to restrict blood flow, causing her extremities to feel icy cold. Ultimately, all her fingers and toes on her right side, followed by the rest in October 2022, were amputated due to necrosis. Louise had to move back in with her parents as she lost her balance and ability to perform daily tasks.
Remarkably, a technician at a prosthetics laboratory found an individual with identical hands, who became her 'hand twin.' Using old photos and measurements from her hand twin, doctors created highly realistic prosthetic limbs. Louise, who was on death's door, expressed immense gratitude for being alive and is learning to adapt to her new reality.
