Study: Poor Kidney Health May Harm Your Brain
18 Feb
Summary
- Chronic kidney disease may increase cognitive impairment risk.
- Higher urinary protein linked to attention and processing decline.
- Study observed over 5,600 participants for six years.

A recent study suggests that chronic kidney disease (CKD) may be linked to an increased risk of cognitive impairment. This progressive loss of kidney function can affect various brain functions, including attention, processing speed, and executive functions.
The research, which followed over 5,600 participants aged 21-79 for six years, found a significant association. Specifically, a higher urinary protein to creatinine ratio, a marker for kidney damage, correlated with measurable declines in cognitive abilities.
While hypertension is a known factor in CKD, researchers noted that it did not fully explain the cognitive decline. Other potential contributing factors include chronic inflammation, oxidative stress, sleep disorders, and anemia, all associated with CKD. These findings underscore the complex interplay between kidney health and brain function.
