- Research focuses on underserved rural communities in Central Alabama.
Researchers in Central Alabama are launching a clinical study to explore the impact of ketogenic therapy on individuals diagnosed with bipolar disorder. This six-month trial, led by UAB Montgomery and supported by Baszucki Group, will enroll up to 100 participants.
The study innovatively collaborates with the Heart of Alabama Food Bank to distribute ketogenic diet food boxes directly to participants, addressing a critical need for accessible mental health services in underserved rural areas.
This research seeks to evaluate both the psychiatric and metabolic benefits of a high-fat, low-carbohydrate diet as an adjunct to existing treatments for serious mental illnesses. Secondary outcomes will monitor healthcare utilization to assess the therapy's broader impact.
