HIV Fear Fades, STI Risk Grows for Kerala's Youth
4 Sep
Summary
- Young people in Kerala face increasing STI risks due to declining HIV fear.
- Clinic attendance for STIs has risen significantly in recent years.
- New HIV infections among youth aged 15-24 have also seen an increase.

A new public health challenge is emerging in Kerala as the diminished fear of HIV leads to increased risks of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) among young people. Changing behaviors, lack of awareness, and substance use contribute to this growing concern.
Data from the Kerala State AIDS Control Society (KSACS) shows a significant rise in attendance at District STI/RTI Centres. From 2023-24 to 2024-25, attendance surged from 41,417 to 63,129, with an additional 51,243 visits in the first seven months of 2025-26. The proportion of clients screened for syphilis also rose significantly.
Of particular concern is the rise in infections among younger demographics. Clinic attendance for those under 19 has increased, and the proportion of newly detected HIV infections among individuals aged 15-24 rose from 10% in 2022-23 to 15% in early 2025-26.
Experts emphasize the need for open conversations about sexual health, safe practices, and consent. The availability of confidential testing and treatment without judgment is crucial. KSACS has also launched a digital tool to help young people assess their sexual health risks and guide them towards appropriate services.
