22 Mar
Summary
- Kerala officials warn of Nipah virus from April to September.
- Focus districts are Kozhikode, Malappuram, Palakkad, and Thrissur.
- Awareness campaigns targeting children are planned due to past victims.

Health authorities in Kerala have sounded an alert for Nipah virus infections, anticipating activity between April and September. This seasonal threat primarily concerns the districts of Kozhikode, Malappuram, Palakkad, and Thrissur, areas that have experienced frequent cases since 2018. Special awareness campaigns are being developed for children, a demographic that has unfortunately been impacted by the virus in recent years.
The Nipah virus has shown a pattern of activity in Kerala during a specific six-month period each year, typically from April onwards, with no cases recorded after September. Experts suggest this is linked to the fruiting season and the breeding patterns of fruit bats, the natural reservoirs of the virus, which become more aggressive during these times, potentially increasing virus shedding.
Preventive measures are being emphasized, including avoiding fruits that have fallen or show signs of bat bites, thoroughly washing and peeling fruits before eating, and maintaining distance from bat roosts. Symptoms to watch for include fever, headache, muscle pain, and respiratory issues. Practicing good hand hygiene and wearing face masks in public are also recommended protective steps against the virus.
