Kerala Mental Health Institute Lacks Director Post-2025 Demise

The Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (IMHANS) in Kozhikode, a key mental healthcare facility in Kerala, has been without a permanent director since January 2025, following the passing of the incumbent. This autonomous institution plays a vital role in mental healthcare delivery, training, research, and policy development, serving patients from nearly all districts in north Kerala.

The process to fill the directorship has stalled since the previous government initiated it. For approximately five months after Dr. P. Krishnakumar's demise, the Principal of Government Medical College, Kozhikode, held the charge. Subsequently, the Head of the Department of Psychiatry assumed responsibility for the interim period.

Staff associations have proposed T.M. Shibu Kumar, an Associate Professor at Government Medical College Hospital, Kozhikode, for the position, citing his familiarity with IMHANS. A full-time director is considered essential for formulating new mental healthcare schemes and advancing research projects.

Beyond patient care, IMHANS offers significant academic programs, including M.Phil courses in Psychiatric Social Work and Clinical Psychology, and a post-basic diploma in psychiatric nursing, many of which were pioneered in Kerala's government sector. The institute, which also houses an autism clinic and rehabilitation projects, was recognized by the Union government as a center of excellence in mental health during its 11th plan.
