Kerala Measles Outbreaks Puzzle Experts
8 Nov
Summary
- Measles now affects all age groups, including vaccinated individuals.
- Infants are contracting measles before nine months of age.
- Study shows vaccinated children sometimes lack protective antibody levels.

Keralam is currently facing measles outbreaks across several districts, with a notable increase in cases among all age groups, extending beyond its usual childhood demographic. Public health experts are emphasizing the need to understand the changing epidemiology of measles. Recent outbreaks have included infants below nine months, who are not yet eligible for vaccination, and even fully vaccinated individuals.
Official figures from November 6 indicated 824 confirmed and 1,681 probable measles cases statewide, with five reported deaths. While measles vaccination was introduced in 1985, concerns are rising about the adequacy of current strategies, especially the first dose at nine months. Studies suggest mothers may be transferring lower antibody levels to their infants, potentially due to vaccination rather than natural infection.
Further research, including a study from the Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Biotechnology, found that a percentage of vaccinated children lacked protective antibody levels, and some showed signs of recent infection or borderline responses. These findings question the durability and adequacy of vaccine-induced immunity, highlighting a need for more epidemiological investigations to determine the primary drivers of these outbreaks and to consider potential adjustments to immunization schedules.
