Doctors Protest Kerala Healthcare Act's Impact
9 Feb
Summary
- IMA urges Kerala to protect small clinics under new act.
- Small hospitals with 15 beds seek exemption from the act.
- Protests planned for February 13 and February 21.

The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has voiced significant concerns regarding the Kerala Clinical Establishments (Registration and Regulation) Act, 2018. The association's State working committee met on Sunday and urged the State government to implement the Act while safeguarding the interests of small hospitals and clinics. These establishments are noted for providing accessible and quality healthcare.
The IMA is seeking an exemption for small hospitals with a capacity of up to 15 beds. They argue that these facilities are vital for delivering affordable healthcare, particularly in rural areas. While the government's response to this specific request has been reportedly favorable, the IMA aims to ensure these clinics are equipped with necessary diagnostic and treatment facilities.
As a measure to expedite a resolution, the IMA has decided to organize protest demonstrations. These will take place on Friday, February 13, in front of all District Medical Offices. The IMA also plans to observe this day as Public Health Protection Day. Further actions include a dharna at the Secretariat on February 21 to highlight the ongoing issues.
