Doctor Attacked After Patient Death: Kerala Doctors Threaten Strike
4 Apr
Summary
- Doctor assaulted in retaliation for a patient's death due to postpartum hemorrhage.
- Medical bodies condemn attacks, demanding safety and threatening action.
- Hospitals lack adequate human resources for safe deliveries, warns KGMOA.

A violent attack on a senior gynaecologist at Perinthalmanna district hospital has alarmed the medical community. The assault occurred nine days after a woman died due to postpartum hemorrhage (PPH), a serious obstetric complication. Her relatives allegedly attacked the doctor in retaliation.
Medical organizations, including KGMOA and IMA, have condemned the pre-meditated attack. They emphasized that such complications are not always preventable and are often misconstrued as negligence. Doctors are now questioning their safety and threatening to withhold services.
The Kerala Government Medical Officers' Association highlighted that over 80 public hospitals lack sufficient human resources for safe deliveries. They called for strengthening facilities and ensuring adequate staffing, noting that even developed nations have not achieved zero maternal mortality.
The Indian Medical Association has threatened a state-wide strike if the perpetrators are not arrested. They also expressed concern that repeated incidents might deter young doctors from specializing in obstetrics and gynaecology, potentially impacting maternal and child care.
