Kerala Ayurveda to Get Allopathy's Parity
14 Jul
Summary
- Kerala government to grant Ayurveda equal status to allopathy.
- A dedicated AYUSH department, headed by a Chief Secretary, is planned.
- Ayurveda and allopathy are seen as complementary, not rival systems.

The Kerala government is committed to ensuring Ayurveda receives recognition and status equal to allopathy within the healthcare sector. Health Minister K. Muraleedharan recently stated that the state will provide comprehensive support to allow traditional Ayurvedic practices to thrive without marginalization.
Speaking at the Vaidyaratnam Founder's Day celebrations, the minister noted the disparity between national-level support from the AYUSH Ministry and the absence of a similar dedicated structure in Kerala. To address this, the state is considering establishing a new AYUSH department, which would be headed by an officer of Chief Secretary rank.
This proposed department aims to give Ayurveda, along with other traditional systems like Unani and naturopathy, the priority it merits. The Vaidyaratnam Group chairman highlighted the importance of global expansion for Ayurveda and urged better utilization of Central AYUSH funds.
Experts, including former Minister K. Rajan and Kerala State Higher Education Council vice-chairperson Achuthsankar S. Nair, emphasized Ayurveda's crucial role and its complementary nature to allopathy, suggesting a future global healthcare model integrating both systems.
