Kentucky Clinic Faces Millions in Funding Cuts

A vital Louisville clinic, Lee Specialty Clinic, which provides specialized medical services for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, is set to face substantial funding reductions. The state-owned facility will experience a decrease of $4.5 million in funding by 2028, stemming from the latest state budget. These cuts are projected to take effect after the new fiscal year begins on July 1, leading to significant staff terminations and a reduced capacity to serve Kentuckians.

The clinic offers a unique, comprehensive approach, housing various providers and services such as physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, and specialized medical and psychological care. This integrated model is crucial for patients with conditions like autism, cerebral palsy, and Down syndrome. A spokesperson for the Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services indicated that the administration had warned the legislature about the severe consequences of these cuts, attributing them partly to federal underfunding.

Governor Andy Beshear has publicly criticized state lawmakers over these reductions, while House Speaker David Osborne has called for the administration to accept responsibility.
