Kent Meningitis Cases Surge: Students Turned Away From Vaccine Queue
20 Mar
Summary
- Over 100 students denied vaccines due to capacity at University of Kent.
- Meningitis cases linked to outbreak rise to 27 in Kent.
- Eligibility for jabs will be widened to include more students and sixth-formers.

An "explosive" outbreak of meningitis in Kent has led to a rise in cases to 27, prompting an urgent public health alert. As part of the response, a major vaccine rollout was initiated, but over 100 students at the University of Kent's Canterbury campus were turned away due to capacity limitations. They were unable to receive a jab after arriving near the closing time of the vaccination center.
Health secretary Wes Streeting announced that the eligibility criteria for the vaccine will be broadened. This expansion will offer jabs to anyone who attended the nightclub at the center of the outbreak between March 5 and March 15, along with sixth-formers from four schools and additional university students in Canterbury. The vaccination program in Kent is scheduled to resume on Friday.
