Kent Meningitis Alert: 20 Cases, 2 Dead
18 Mar
Summary
- Five new meningitis cases reported in Kent, totaling 20.
- Two young individuals, a student and a teen, have died.
- Targeted MenB vaccination for 5,000 university students begins.

An unprecedented outbreak of meningitis in Kent has led to 20 confirmed cases, with two young people losing their lives. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) announced five new cases on Wednesday, all impacting young adults. Tragically, a 21-year-old university student and a teenage student have died.
The majority of these cases are linked to the Club Chemistry nightclub in Canterbury between March 5-7. In response, the UKHSA has administered approximately 2,500 doses of antibiotics across Kent. A targeted MenB vaccination program is now underway, initially offered to 5,000 University of Kent students at the Canterbury campus, with potential expansion.
Health officials describe the outbreak's spread as unprecedented. Symptoms to watch for include fever, headache, rapid breathing, drowsiness, and vomiting. A distinctive rash that doesn't fade under pressure can also indicate septicaemia. Young adults, particularly those starting university, are identified as a high-risk group due to increased social mixing.
