Meningitis B Jabs Expanded After Deadly Kent Outbreak
20 Mar
Summary
- Vaccination program expanded to include nightclub attendees.
- Two young lives lost to meningitis B in recent outbreak.
- University and sixth-form students are now eligible for jabs.

A significant expansion of the meningitis B vaccination program is underway in Kent following a severe outbreak that has resulted in fatalities. The UK Health and Security Agency (UKHSA) has broadened eligibility for the MenB vaccine beyond University of Kent students residing in university halls.
Now, any individual who visited Club Chemistry in Canterbury between March 5 and March 15 is encouraged to receive the jab. This measure addresses the confirmed and suspected cases, which have reached 27. The outbreak has tragically claimed the lives of a 21-year-old University of Kent student and an 18-year-old sixth-former.
Furthermore, sixth-form students within Kent where confirmed or probable cases have been identified are now eligible. Eligibility also extends to anyone who has already been provided with preventative antibiotic treatment by the UKHSA, ensuring a comprehensive response to the ongoing health concern.
