Summary
- Resident doctors oppose proposed renaming of KEM Hospital.
- Doctors seek reforms for patient care and welfare instead.
- Concerns include infrastructure and stipend issues.

Resident doctors at the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC)-run King Edward Memorial Hospital (KEM) in Parel have publicly stated their opposition to a recent proposal to rename the renowned institution. The civic health committee had passed a resolution to change the hospital's name to 'Kaushalyashreshtha Ekalavya Memorial (KEM) Hospital'. This proposal requires further approval from the municipal commissioner and the BMC general body.
The Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors (MARD) at KEM Hospital argued that renaming a long-standing and respected institution does not address the pressing issues faced by the hospital. They pointed to critical concerns such as substandard hostel infrastructure, recurring lift breakdowns, and inconsistent disbursement of stipends.
Members of KEM MARD stressed that the focus should remain on implementing substantial reforms to strengthen healthcare systems and enhance the working conditions for medical professionals. They asserted that KEM Hospital's current name carries decades of trust, service, and excellence, and this valuable legacy must be protected through tangible improvements rather than a name alteration.
