Summary
- Karnataka faces increasing diabetic foot cases annually.
- Nerve damage can occur even before diabetes diagnosis.
- Innovators are developing dynamic offloading footwear for better healing.

Karnataka is grappling with a significant and growing burden of diabetic foot conditions. Between 11,000 and 13,500 cases have been recorded annually at the Karnataka Institute of Endocrinology and Research over the past three to four years. This alarming trend highlights the critical need for early detection and treatment.
Experts note that neuropathy, or nerve damage, can manifest even before individuals are diagnosed with diabetes. This nerve damage, commonly affecting the legs and feet, is a consequence of prolonged high blood sugar levels. The condition is being observed in both young and old patients, emphasizing its broad impact.
To combat this growing issue, innovators have developed dynamic offloading footwear. This technology, a collaboration between KIER and IISc, aims to improve healing and prevent new injuries by using a unique snapping mechanism to maintain foot balance. Researchers are seeking a second patent to enable mass production and reduce costs, making this vital innovation accessible to all.
The article also provides essential foot care advice, urging daily washing and inspection, avoiding walking barefoot, wearing properly fitting shoes, and maintaining a healthy diet. Neglecting wounds or cracked feet is strongly discouraged.
