Karnataka Lung Cancer Cases Rise Sharply

Lung cancer constitutes a significant health challenge in Karnataka, representing over 6% of all new cancer cases identified in the state. As of 2025, approximately 5,503 lung cancer cases were estimated, with 3,787 among males and 1,716 among females. This disease is projected to cause around 2,048 deaths in Karnataka.

Tobacco remains the paramount preventable risk factor for lung cancer. Public health officials stress the importance of tobacco use prevention, cessation programs, and protection from secondhand smoke to mitigate the disease's burden. Air pollution and occupational exposures also contribute to lung cancer risk.

Early diagnosis of lung cancer is complicated by its often non-specific initial symptoms. Persistent symptoms like coughing up blood, unexplained weight loss, or chest pain require immediate attention, particularly for individuals with pre-existing risk factors. Globally, lung cancer is a leading cause of cancer-related mortality.
