Karnataka Launches Miracle Cure for Rare Blood Disorder
25 Feb
Summary
- New program offers free high-end treatment for hemophilia.
- Monthly injections replace painful weekly treatments, showing zero bleeds.
- Free ambulance transport to 36 treatment centers provided.

Karnataka has initiated the 'Kusuma Sanjeevini' program, a major step towards enhancing life for individuals with rare genetic blood disorders like hemophilia. Launched on Wednesday, this comprehensive initiative by the State government provides high-end prophylactic treatment and emergency transport services at no cost.
The program introduces Emicizumab, a groundbreaking monthly subcutaneous injection that effectively prevents bleeding episodes. This advanced treatment replaces the traditional, painful weekly intravenous factor replacement therapy, demonstrating a "zero bleeds" outcome in a pilot study of 200 patients. This significant advancement promises to prevent joint deformities and disabilities associated with chronic hemophilia.
With an allocation of ₹42.55 crore, including ₹17 crore for Emicizumab procurement, Karnataka ensures the treatment is entirely free for its 2,621 registered hemophilia patients. The State has prioritized 1,000 high-risk patients, primarily children, for immediate transition to this new regimen.
To ensure timely medical access, a dedicated 108 ambulance service offers free 'pick-up and drop' facilities. These ambulances will ensure rapid transport to any of the 36 Integrated Treatment Centers for Hemoglobinopathies and Hemophilia (ICHH) across the State, crucial for managing potentially life-threatening bleeding episodes.
