Karnataka Tackles C-Section Surge with Pain Relief
4 Jan
Summary
- Karnataka plans pain management options like epidurals in government hospitals.
- Nearly 47% of institutional births in Karnataka are C-sections.
- Initiative aims to reduce C-section risks and lower maternal mortality rates.

Karnataka's health department is set to introduce labour analgesia options, such as epidural injections and nitrous oxide, in government hospitals to address the state's high rate of C-sections, which currently stands at 47% of institutional births. This proactive measure aims to ease the fear of pain during childbirth, encouraging more women to opt for natural deliveries and consequently decrease the risks linked to surgical births and reduce maternal mortality.
A pilot study in Tumakuru highlighted the concerning prevalence of C-sections, prompting this statewide initiative. The government is focusing on providing pain relief options like epidurals and self-administered nitrous oxide, while also exploring other natural birthing methods. Additionally, information regarding the comparative immunity levels of babies born via C-section versus natural delivery will be added to consent forms.
