On World Suicide Prevention Day 2026, Project USHAS announced a significant statewide expansion, reaching 37 government hospitals across Karnataka. This initiative, a collaboration between NIMHANS and the State government, aims to provide structured psychosocial care to individuals who have survived suicide attempts or self-harm incidents.
The expanded program will cover all 31 district hospitals and six government hospitals in Bengaluru for one year. It seeks to establish a robust post-attempt care pathway throughout the state's hospital network. This includes trained professionals, family support, and follow-up for up to 12 months.
Since its inception in 2022, Project USHAS has registered 35,436 cases. Interventions have included counselling, risk assessment, and structured follow-up for survivors, alongside parallel support for their families. Early data indicates a low reattempt rate among those receiving support.
Under the expanded initiative, psychiatric social workers and clinical psychologists will deliver specialized interventions. A dedicated helpline will also be available to assist survivors, underscoring a comprehensive approach to mental health support.
