Following the World Health Organization's declaration of a Public Health Emergency of International Concern on May 17, 2026, the Karnataka Health Department has significantly increased its surveillance and preparedness for Ebola. The Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Chest Diseases in Bengaluru has been designated as an isolation center, with the Epidemic Diseases Hospital serving as a quarantine and treatment facility.
In Mangaluru, Srinivas Port Hospital is identified as a quarantine center, and Wenlock District Hospital will function as the isolation and treatment facility. Samples from individuals suspected of having Ebola will be sent to the National Institute of Virology in Bengaluru for testing at NIV Pune.
The department emphasized that no Ebola cases have been reported in India thus far. However, intensified precautionary measures are in place due to international travel and trade. Returning travelers from affected countries are advised to self-monitor for 21 days and report any symptoms immediately. The state has also enhanced surveillance under the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme, coordinated with airports, and ensured supplies of personal protective equipment and medicines.
