Karnataka Bans Junk Food Near Schools

Karnataka's Food Safety and Drug Administration has implemented a ban on the sale and promotion of high-fat, sugar, and salt (HFSS) food products. This advisory specifically targets school and college campuses, extending to a 50-meter exclusion zone. The directive, issued on July 24, mandates that educational institutions ensure no HFSS foods are sold on their premises and display warning signs.
Health Minister U.T. Khader stated that inspections revealed many school meals relied on refined carbohydrates and processed snacks. Consequently, schools are now advised to provide balanced meals featuring lean proteins and healthy fats to ensure sustained energy and better student concentration. The ban also affects food businesses within the 50-meter radius, requiring them to comply with safety standards and licenses.
In July, a state-wide inspection drive examined 134 educational institutions and food establishments. Following this, 53 food samples were collected for analysis, with legal action planned based on the findings. School managements are also encouraged to promote nutritious food awareness and organize programs discouraging junk food consumption.
