Karnataka to Allow Anonymous Organ Donation
30 Sep
Summary
- Karnataka will frame guidelines for anonymous organ donations.
- The state will be the second in India to permit such donations.
- Guidelines are expected within eight weeks following court direction.

The Karnataka government has announced plans to introduce guidelines for living organ donors to contribute anonymously to recipients within eight weeks. This initiative follows a high court directive after a petition was filed by a Davangere businessman seeking to donate a kidney.
Karnataka will follow Kerala, which implemented similar guidelines in 2018 after a court order. The court stressed that the donor and recipient must remain anonymous in these non-directed donations.
The petitioner, found medically fit for kidney donation by Victoria Hospital, was advised to approach Jeevasarthakathe. The court clarified that anonymity must be maintained, though details can be shared later with consent.
Between 2007 and July 2026, Karnataka recorded 3,859 organ donations, with kidneys forming the largest number. Kerala's earlier guidelines also emphasized anonymity and recommended a supportive fund for donors.
