An HIV outbreak at Karachi's Kulsoom Bai Valika Hospital has tragically resulted in the deaths of six children and infected 94 others since November 2025. The Sindh health department confirmed the alarming rise in cases, prompting swift government action. A committee of leading medical experts has been formed to oversee the lifelong treatment strategies for all affected individuals.
The Sindh government has also allocated a substantial PKR 2 billion endowment fund dedicated to the long-term care and management of these children. Investigations into the outbreak's origin are underway, with the Sindh High Court directing provincial authorities to provide explanations and potentially hold hearings. The court's intervention followed a petition highlighting concerns over alleged reuse of contaminated syringes and seeking independent inquiries and compensation.
In addition to the pediatric cases, tests conducted in the hospital's vicinity revealed that 120 individuals, including adults and children among nearly 10,000 people screened, tested HIV positive. These individuals are also receiving treatment funded by the government. The affected children are currently being treated at five prominent medical institutions across the city.
