Thane Hospital Blood Bank Faces Critical Shortage
24 Dec, 2025
Summary
- Kalwa hospital faces a 30% blood shortage, impacting critical surgeries.
- Patient relatives fail to replace blood units, exacerbating the crisis.
- The hospital serves Thane and Palghar districts, handling 6,000 patients daily.

Kalwa hospital, a vital medical center serving Thane and Palghar districts, is experiencing a critical blood shortage. The hospital's blood bank has a 30% deficit, severely limiting its capacity to perform life-saving surgeries.
This scarcity is exacerbated by patients' relatives failing to replace blood units, a standard practice. The situation is compounded by the ongoing remodeling of the Thane civil hospital, increasing the patient load on Kalwa. Currently, only 20 blood bottles can be issued daily, affecting treatments requiring plasma and platelets.
Hospital administration is appealing for direct blood donations and organizing donation camps. This comes after a period of heightened mortality in August 2025, when 18 patients died in a single day, some referred from distant areas including the Gujarat border.
