Julia Bradbury: Don't Ignore Your Body's Signals
18 Feb
Summary
- Sixty-five percent of midlife adults ignore body signals more than road signs.
- Many ignore symptoms like fatigue and sleep issues for over a year.
- Early diagnostic scans can empower informed health decisions.

Presenter Julia Bradbury is encouraging individuals to be vigilant about their bodily signals following her own health challenges.
Research revealed that 65% of midlife adults prioritize observing road signs over heeding new or unusual signals from their bodies. Bradbury, a survivor of cancer and a brain cyst, stressed the importance of recognizing these signs, which were crucial in her own diagnoses.
She advised that midlife is an opportune time to understand one's body better and feel empowered to seek medical advice when something feels amiss. This proactive approach, she noted, is about taking charge of current and future health.
The research also found that 76% of people are uncertain about which symptoms warrant medical attention, with over half admitting to ignoring warning signs for an average of 14 months. Common symptoms overlooked include sleep disturbances, joint pain, persistent fatigue, unexplained aches, and digestive changes.
Dr. Reem Hasan, NHS GP and Chief Medical Officer at Vista Health, noted that many people struggle to identify significant symptoms and that demand for private diagnostic scans is increasing. She emphasized that while not all symptoms are serious, bodies send early warning signals that are often ignored.
Diagnostic scans and health checks are presented as vital tools for midlife, offering clarity and enabling informed decisions rather than living with uncertainty.
