Canadian author and psychologist Jordan Peterson, aged 63, has been diagnosed with akathisia, a condition frequently associated with psychiatric medications and known for its profoundly distressing symptoms. His daughter, Mikhaila, disclosed in a recent video that Peterson is suffering from a "psych med-induced neurological injury." This condition has reportedly persisted even after he stopped taking psychiatric medications six years ago. The situation was complicated by a significant health decline last summer, potentially triggered by mold exposure and stress, followed by pneumonia and sepsis.
Akathisia is primarily linked to antipsychotic, antidepressant, and other psychiatric drugs, often occurring with dosage changes or abrupt cessation. It is believed to stem from neurotransmitter imbalances, particularly dopamine, affecting movement and mood regulation. Symptoms include extreme internal restlessness and an overwhelming urge to move, most notably in the lower limbs. Peterson previously endured a severe withdrawal from benzodiazepines between 2019 and 2020, which led him to seek emergency detoxification in Russia after his medication dosage was increased.
