AIIMS Jodhpur has announced its first successful delivery following in vitro fertilisation (IVF) utilizing surgically retrieved sperm. This landmark achievement was realized in a couple affected by congenital obstructive azoospermia, a condition where sperm production is normal but a blockage prevents their entry into semen.
The intricate procedure involved a multidisciplinary team and employed surgical sperm retrieval, followed by IVF with intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI). This technique, where a single sperm is injected directly into an egg, resulted in an embryo that was successfully transferred, leading to a healthy delivery.
AIIMS Jodhpur's Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) Centre has been offering surgical sperm retrieval and related fertility services for the past two years. The executive director encouraged couples facing conception difficulties to seek timely consultation and evaluation at the ART Centre.
